​The Ganga, the most sacred and worshipped river of the Hindus, is now one of the most polluted rivers of the country.The river directly and indirectly affects the largest population of any river in the world with over more than 420 million people who rely on it for food, water, bathing and agriculture. The river ganges is getting beyond a joke and something needs to be done now. A solution however, seems far away with gross negligence, ignorance and carelessness pouring from every sector of Indian society.But, all hope is not lost for the civilizations along the ganges and there does seem to be some hope on the horizon for the serious case of the Ganges river pollution.  What is more, some of the claims made by Hindus about the rivers purifying effects do have some basis in science. This pollution is due to the dumping of city garbage, industrial effluents, human and animal excreta, agricultural wastes, pesticides, burning of human bodies, community bathing and faulty social and religious practices. According to an estimate about 19,659 tons of polluted matters enter the river every year in india.
